TestSeek's Expert Reviews Summary

Announced in September 2008, this model of Canon is a successor of Digital IXUS 960 IS. Improved resolution and face self-timer are the chief additional features of this model. Encased within a black case, the camera is extremely stylish.

Ability to control shutter speed and aperture are two features that distinguish this model from others. It also features an optical zoom of 3.7x and a 2.5" LCD screen. Another promising feature is a 14.7 mega pixel camera.

This gadget is designed such that it fits perfectly into the hand’s geometry. The directional pad ensures easy switching between the menu options. It also offers a variety of scene modes that enhances the photographic experiences. The completely manual functions, operation at the speed of lightning, and superior image quality are the striking features that attract a person towards this gadget.

The gadget also features keys that are quite comfortable to operate. A short 1.8 seconds is all it need to get switched on and capture the initial snap. HD video recording, touch screen option and Wi-Fi facility makes photography so special. The sporty look and the grip it provides makes this model attractive in the first sight itself. The placement of the keys is set in a way that ensures rapid switching between the menu modes.

The editors liked

TestSeek's Conclusion

Though editor’s didn’t appreciate the confusing operations the price tag of $ 298.44 is not at all high as the features which this gadget delivers make it quite worth for the value. The sport appearance and the quality of the pictures were really admired by the reviewers.

  • High resolution images, Good screen with optional viewfinder, Great battery life with viewfinder, Manual control over exposure.
  • Lacking true wide-angle coverage, No optical zoom while filming, No HD video or HDMI port, Modest burst mode at 1.3fps.
  • As we said at the top, Canon’s Digital IXUS 980 IS / PowerShot SD990 IS is a good solid compact camera with some strong features which allow it to stand out in the crowd not to mention within Canon’s own broad range. It may not be the newest m...

  • Image quality, high ISO performance, body shape
  • Price, LCD could be larger, cramped button layout
  • Overall then, performance is excellent with the IXUS 980IS, though this is what you’d hope from a camera with its price tag. The 980IS features an SRP of £389, which it’s safe to say is at the high end of the compact market. This price has now...

  • Excellent picture quality; very good shooting options for its size.
  • Disappointing lens specs; mixed performance; high-resolution sensor adds little benefit; no HD video.
  • The Canon PowerShot SD990 IS is a fine ultracompact camera, but its price-to-feature benefits are questionable. Specifications: Digital camera type: Compact ; Resolution: 14.7 megapixels ; Optical zoom: 3.7 x ; See full specs Price range: $299.88 - $39...

  • Superior build quality, styling, Quick Shot mode makes OVF shooting logical, Decent all around performance, Sensible feature set offers the stuff you need without the bloat,
  • Highres sensor muddies up images, Lens performance, specs only adequate, LCD should be bigger for this price, Too much money for too few bells and whistles?,
  • The secret to Canon's dominance in the world of small cameras is really no secret at all: the PowerShot line has long been perceived to offer both performance and image quality that are superior to anything else out there. And the SD990 exemplifies the...

  • The Canon Digital IXUS 980 IS / PowerShot SD990 IS Digital ELPH is the current flagship of the IXUS / ELPH range, and the first to offer a true manual mode. While the range of f-stops selectable at any given focal length is rather restricted, probabl...
