Three-CCD imaging delivers stunning video quality, excellent manual controls, relatively low price for a top-of-the-line model
Lacks features from the old PV-GS400, such as headphone jack, analog-to-digital passthrough and multicontrol ring
In terms of video quality, manual controls and overall value, Panasonics PV-GS500 is a hard camcorder to beat. In fact, despite a lower suggested retail price, the only disappointing thing about this top-of-the-line three-CCD MiniDV unit is that it d...
Terrific video resolution and performance
Priced lower than its predecessor
Retains many great features like a focus ring and superb manual controls
An overall standout among DV camcorders, but not by the wide margin of the PVGS400
Loss of ring control over zoom, digital passthrough, headphone output and – sadly much more.
We knew the PVGS400...the PVGS400 was a friend of ours. Panasonic PVGS500, you are no PVGS400...
The PV-GS500 represents the best of what Panasonic has to offer in MiniDV this year. This top-of-the-line camcorder has some big shoes to fill, however, and ardent fans of its predecessor, the feature-packed PV-GS400, will not be impressed. Panasonic&rsqu...
Outstanding video quality; good selection of controls for both automatic and manual shooting; superior optical image stabilization.

Abstract: The PV-GS500 suffers from poor in-camera sharpening and relatively lackluster low light performance, and its resolution, while great for an SD (standard definition) camcorder, is still only SD. In terms of price, the PV-GS500 is still a great buy ? MSR...

Great video and decent stills; nice zoom lens with effective optical stabilizer.
A bit large; limited manual controls with poor accessibility; sluggish performance on auto; no headphone jack.
While its predecessor had prosumer aspirations, the Panasonic PV-GS500 is strictly for casual videographers who want top-notch video on autopilot.
