  • High-resolution image Provides full 1080p resolution Ethernet port for networked content Reasonable price Multi-disc playback capabilities Internet connection for updates and added content
  • Lack of analog outputs for the new audio formats Average performance when playing regular DVDs Inactive USB ports Remote difficult to use in dim light
  • s The biggest obstacle to getting HD discs into homes has been the high price of the players - something that the HD-A20 effectively eliminates. While its use as a regular DVD player could be far better, you’re buying it for how splendidly it displa...

  • Abstract:  Toshiba recently issued an update for its second-generation HD DVD players, primarily for the HD-A20 and the HD-XA2. I installed the update on an HD-A20, the middle model in Toshibas HD DVD lineup (though shortly to be superceded in the launch of a t...

  • Excellent image quality on HD DVD in 1080i mode; good upscaling performance on film-based DVDs; Ethernet jack included for firmware upgrades; onboard Dolby TrueHD decoding; much faster load times than its predecessor.
  • Somewhat disappointing picture quality in 1080p mode; ongoing format war means many films wont be available on HD DVD; no multichannel analog outputs.
  • The Toshiba HD-A20 is a perfectly competent HD DVD player, but its not worth the extra money when compared to the budget Toshiba HD-A2.

  • Abstract:  HD DVD vs. Blu-ray. It seems, once again, consumers are in the middle of yet another format war. While round one has seemingly come and gone with the introduction of both parties’ initial efforts a little over a year ago, like all good fights, nothi...

  • Abstract:  1080p HD DVD for $500—sort of. The new models of HD DVD and Blu-ray players are coming faster and faster. Even better, theyre getting cheaper and offering more features. The big draw for the HD-A20 is its 1080p output. That, and a price tag of $499...

  • Abstract:  At $499 retail, the HD-A20, with its ABT1018 chipset from Anchor Bay (DVDO), is not only an incredible value for the money, but quite possibly the best HD DVD player on the market today. The image quality the HD-A20 is capable of achieving with both HD...

  • Abstract:  Although 1080p video has been encoded on every HD DVD disc released so far, the first generation HD DVD players have been "limited" to mere 1080i output. With the second generation this changed, first with the upscale $799 HD-XA2 and now with the HD-A...
