  • Abstract:  Before the letters page overflows with kindness, you might be wondering why I'm covering a £1,000+ camera in Micro Mart? I've included this specific item to put in perspective why this is better than anything you'll find on a phone, or a compact design. T...

  • 7fps burst shooting; body integral anti-shake; weather sealed/protected chassis; high-resolution rear LCD with Live View, plus additional top-plate LCD
  • Rear LCD fixed; pricey compared with other options here; blocky design
  • As we always find with Pentax models, it's in the area of image quality that the K-5 really shines, with detail and colour being especially punchy and even exposures delivered with the minimum of fuss. This then is a very capable alternative to Canon and...

  • Rugged and chunky build, Large button, High 921k dot resolution backplate LCD plus additional top plate screen, Quick power up and response times, 7fps burst shooting
  • Odd auto focusing in Live View, LCD resolutely fixed to camera, Expensive trade up from a compact
  • Anyone with older Pentax lenses looking to switch to digital will find the K-5 a staunch ally. Not quite as good as the Canon and Nikon but a robust and reliable nonetheless. A solid choice but perhaps not the obvious one.

  • Outstanding image quality; strong performance at high-sensitivity settings; robust build quality; 1080p video capture
  • Expensive; mono-only microphone
  • The Pentax K-5 may be an expensive digital SLR, but it certainly packs in plenty of features for the price, and its performance is worth coughing up for....

  • Good build and allweather casing, Advanced custom settings (buttons and rings), Fast and responsive, even the onscreen viewfinder, Excellent picture quality (noise handled very well), Incredibly compact / mechanical stabilisation system
  • Focusing with onscreen viewfinder still not as good as in certain micro fourthirds cameras, Mono microphone (but stereo socket available for an external mic.), Grip handle placed a little to high for big hands
  • The K-5 isn't short of top-notch competitors but it's definitely up there with the best. It has several key advantages you'll be hard pushed to find elsewhere (full weatherproofing, mechanical stabilisation, custom controls) and offers excellent overal...

  • Superb image quality with bags of detail, great range of features, particularly Sensitivity priority and Shutter and Aperture Priority modes, body integral Anti-Shake, anti-dust system, build and environment protection, RAW (PEF or DNG) +JPEG mode, excell
  • Some features such as HDR shooting only available in JPEG shooting, slightly soft default images, does not accept SDXC cards, standard 18-55mm lens suffers from magenta and blue fringing
  • The Pentax K-5 is a comprehensively specified professional or semi-professional DSLR that is capable of superb results, it is also one of the best examples of such a camera we’ve had to tinker with; image quality, low noise and superbly useful features...
