The editors liked

  • The interface looks and feels great. I really want the promise of Android TV to be realized
  • Because there's a lot of potential here
  • It's pretty damn cool that you can voice search for any actor
  • Director
  • Or series and get a list of films and their cast

The editors didn't like

  • Google didn't get it together before launch. The software doesn't feel remotely complete. It didn't get partners to properly integrate their apps with the platform's most intriguing features
  • Like recommendations and voice search. It didn't do a great job

  • Attractive aesthetics all around, Great gaming controller and remote, Googlecast integration is a big plus
  • Connections drop often (wifi, controllers, etc), Limited storage space, Limited games and apps, Software experience just doesn't feel fully polished just yet
  • 5.0 The Nexus Player, and Android TV platform in general, have tons of potential and we're really excited to see where Google takes it. Unfortunately, we just aren't there yet, between a limited library and software quirks, I find myself going back to Chr...

  • Android TV is ambitious, certainly, but it's also flawed in a number of ways. It's too early for the voice search to be genuinely useful unless you buy your content solely from Google Play, and beyond it the basics of navigation can be annoying. Some resul...

  • Voice search is simple and intuitive, Simple card-based interface, Google Cast gives it Chromecast-like features
  • Limited storage, Search results are limited to Google-related content sources, Buggy software, Chintzy remote, No Ethernet port
  • The Nexus Player is a great, if imperfect, introductory showcase for Android TV. It doesn't have an Ethernet port and suffers from a few bugs, but Android TV's simple interface, intelligent voice search and Google Cast abilities more than make up for it....

  • Abstract:  When Google announced last month that it would bring a $99 streaming-media Nexus Player to the market, it invited a one-word response: Why?Google's past ventures into TV-connected appliances have not fared well. It launched Google TV back in 2010, but tha...

  • It's the first Android TV player. That might not make it great, but I'm pretty glad it exists – it can only get better from here. It's about time we have the full Google Play experience on the bigger screen, There's a lot of potential here. I'm going to h
  • It's still kind of janky. There are a lot of loose ends that need to be tied up here. For example, when the primary screen refreshes, oftentimes the suggested YouTube videos still link to what was previously in that spot. Nothing is more annoying than cli
  • I'm going to be as blunt as possible here: Android TV simply isn't ready for the consumer market. It's lacking a lot of good content, and what it can provide on the TV front can be done with Chromecast (aside from a dedicated interface). If you want gamin...

  • While getting the product demo for the Nexus Player I asked, "Do I now throw my Chromecast out?"  Nope.  This is set to do more than the Chromecast for more $$$.  Not to replace it but to add more abilities to it while creating another tier of Google's st...

  • Nice compact form factor, Dual-band Wi-Fi, Controller is pretty nice
  • No Ethernet, Limited Storage, Sometimes ‘jittery' playback on Games, Google Casting sometimes gets ‘weird', Hardware
  • The Nexus Player is a Nexus device, so naturally it's a must buy for me. It's also the first Android TV device on the market and with no details from Sony or Razer on when their SmartTVs or set-top box are expected to arrive on our shores – if an Android ...

  • The Google Nexus Player Android TV streaming box offers good conversational voice search from the included physical remote. If you use your smartphone or tablet to Cast compatible apps, it provides access to most important services. It delivers Android ga
  • At launch, native app selection is abysmal compared with that of Roku, Apple TV and Amazon Fire TV. The interface seems designed to push users toward Google's media services, and voice search doesn't yet include major third-party apps like Netflix or Hulu
  • Until it receives a major infusion of native apps and developer support, and better integrates non-Google services, the Nexus Player with Android TV offers no compelling upgrade over other streaming devices....

  • As far as games go, the Nexus Player suffers the same problem of having a limited library. You're not, for example, going to go out and buy Sword & Sworcery EP and start playing the celebrated indie title on your TV...
