  • Abstract:  Google's Chromecast caused a mini storm in the media streamer world when it was announced earlier this year. The inexpensive HDMI 'stick' works quite differently to the Amazon Fire TV set-top box, so here we explain which is best in our Chromecast vs Fire...

  • This is an easy to use streamer with great voice-controlled search. The hardware has plenty of features and it's fast. A reasonable number of UK services are supported, including iPlayer. If you have an Amazon Prime subscription, it's the best way to watc
  • A cheaper model currently on sale in the US will probably arrive in the UK soon. There's no ITV, Channel 4 or Now TV support, and the voice search only works with Amazon material. It's expensive too
  • A great media streamer that will suit you perfectly if you buy everything from Amazon. If not, Roku makes better value boxes....

  • Incredibly easy to set up, A cinch to use, Superb Prime Video Integration, Slick Netflix and iPlayer Apps, Sideloading, Great for casual gaming
  • Lacking on video apps, No expandable storage option, No 1080p24 Support
  • Should I Buy a Fire TV?As ever with these devices it depends on what you want/need in terms of content. Speaking as a holder of both an Amazon Prime and Netflix account, it makes a great deal of sense and at only £79, it offers great value. The major omis...

  • Abstract:  By 2014 the landscape has changed completely, with the introduction of SmartTVs, internet-connected consoles like the Xbox and PlayStation, and VOD services like Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon. No longer are you forced to pay Sky a premium rate subscription fo...

  • Simple setup and UI, Good AV performance, Compact, tidy design
  • Voice search limited to Amazon content, Occasional remote lag
  • Amazon Fire TV verdict Open Gallery While you couldn't call it totally open, the Fire TV isn't locked inside its walled garden quite as tightly as the Apple TV is – let's say the gate is ajar. It embraces more third-party providers than Apple, in...

  • In use you get the impression there is plenty of promise here. Fire TV is a neat and well-specified device. On this score it easily beats Apple TV, Roku 3 or Google Chromecast in memory and processor. The out of box experience is good, especially for Pri...

  • Puts video, apps and game content at the fore, Slim and sleek design, Simple UI, Faster CPU and enhanced graphics
  • Software buggy and glitchy, Amazon content takes priority, No universal search
  • The Amazon Fire TV is a sleek and effective advert for Amazon's services and a promising casual gaming console. More third-party apps would be nice, but it's a must-have for Amazon users....

  • Abstract:  Amazon made a good impression on us with its Fire TV set-top box, and gave Apple and Google something to think about; one because Apple TV has no gaming feature, and two because Chromecast was just a streaming USB stick. However, with Google now getting i...

  • Beautifully designed, impressive voice search, fast and powerful, open to third-party services, original in-house games available
  • No HDMI cable included in the box, voice search only works with a few services, needs more of the main broadcaster apps
  • We rather liked Amazon Fire TV both sides of the pond. However, it has a lot of very capable competition too. And that will only increase when Google releases its similarly Android-based Nexus Player. Part of its problem is that, unlike some of tho...

  • As a first attempt at an all-in-one media device, Amazon's Fire TV micro-console is nicely positioned given the $99 price-point. Physically, the hardware sports a tidy, discrete design, and its components are more than capable for tackling video streaming...
