The editors didn't like
I'm not crazy about the SteamOS UI-sometimes it feels a little too much like a PC

Abstract: The Alienware Alpha will use its own interface built on top of Windows 8.1 rather than Valve's Linux-based SteamOS. But Steam is still the lifeblood of this system, as the small-footprint box will bring PC gaming to your HDTV using Steam's “Big Picture” m...
If you love PC gaming, and are specifically a long-time Steam user who loves PC gaming, then you owe it to yourself to give this puppy a go. If you're a gamer who's lukewarm on PC gaming — especially if you don't use Steam — don't do it...
The Alienware Steam Machine brings Valve's Steam OS concept to life at an affordable price. It has a larger launch library than any living room console and it includes the unique new Steam Controller
Steam OS is locked out of a vast majority of the Steam game library, including nearly every hot new PC game. The controller has a deep learning curve, and will never be the best choice for some games. The more capable Windows version of this hardware cost
There are many ways to put PC games on a living room TV, and the Alienware Steam Machine is one of the most ambitious. Like all new console launches, there are rocky patches, but the biggest hurdle may be proving why Steam OS is a better choice than Wind...

Compact, attractive design, Includes Steam Controller, SteamOS brings PC-gaming innovations to the television, Performance surpasses consoles
No Windows support, Only compatible with the fraction of Linux games available on Steam, Pricey considering the specs
The Alienware Steam Machine's wonderful dream of PC-gaming optimized for your television is undercut by the disappointing reality of a gaming PC that only supports Linux...
PC gaming is great and all, but it's a bit darn nerdy, isn't it? Locked away in a dark corner of the house while all the cool kids are hanging out in the lounge with their PlayStations and Xboxes. What PC gaming needs is an injection of fun, accessibility...
Fresh and fun design, Gorgeous lighting scheme, Dedicated GPU at entry level
Still unproven product, Small on I/O
Alienware's Steam Machine is a gorgeous piece of hardware – something that would fit right in with your other game consoles or cable box in the entertainment center. While the company was only prepared to show a mockup unit, it's somewhat comforting to b...
Lounge-friendly form and OS, Traditional mouse games playable on the pad
Not enough big-hitting games on SteamOS, Controller is far from perfect
There are great things about console gaming - its fuss-free nature, big-hitting games and apps tailored and optimised to a single hardware specification that will remain constant for years. And there are fantastic things about PC gaming too - the ability t...
