  • Abstract:  The Sony DSC-R1 made news as the first all-in-one camera with a DSLR-sized sensor and a gorgeous, Zeiss-labeled zoom lens fixed to the camera body. The R1 lists for just a nickel under $1000, but based on the specs ? 10 megapixel 21.5 x 14.4mm CMOS sen...

  • The image quality from the R1 is exceptional but the real killer up its sleeve is its ability to take photos at high ISO -- up to 1600 -- without showing any objectionable noise. Combining the low noise with the outstanding white balance correction mea...
  • The high price is what cost the R1 a five star rating. $1800 puts it up against some good SLRs. A Canon 350D will not take better photos than the Sony but it does allow for interchangeable lenses and it does have a real viewfinder.
  • The Sony DSC–R1 is a worthy successor to the F828, the best all-in-one camera that we had so far tested. Occasionally a camera comes along that is such a pleasure to use that you find yourself picking it up and looking for subjects just for the fun...

  • Excellent zoom lens, Quiet operation
  • Manual focusing is difficult, three frame buffer is small The Final Word If you dont need to swap lenses, precisely focus manually or shoot more than three frames at a time, the DSCR1 is a better bet than a budget digital SLR.

  • Excellent image quality, An impressively flexible LCD screen thats viewable from many angles, A sharp Zeiss lens, Effective white-balancing features, A wide range of ISO sensitivity, Quick performance
  • With most heavy components on the left side, the chunky body is somewhat off-balance, Cant shoot raw in burst mode, The in-camera review function magnifies to only 5x
  • If you dont anticipate a need for multiple lenses -- which many users wont, given the crisp 24mm-to-120mm-equivalent lens with a maximum aperture of f/2.8 -- the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-R1 makes a worthy competitor to the dSLRs in its price range. Its ...
