  • Sleek, classic silver shell, Excellent reproduction of cool tones, Low price point
  • Harsh, glaring automatic flash, Flat, drab reproduction of warm yellowy tones, Very bright whites above ISO 50

  • The Pentax Optio M40 has all the basic functions of an entry-level camera… and then some. But with its ultra-slim lightweight body and seriously good looks, a more than ample resolution of 8Mp and the ability to let you take complete manual control...

  • Easy to use, good wide-view screen, nice design and build, good colour and metering performance, ISO and exposure compensation in most settings
  • Noise at all ISOs, pixel fringing, lens soft at edges, poor low light focus performance
  • The M40 is a nice camera, and that’s the problem, it is nice not brilliant

  • We think Pentax has come up with a cracking design for the Optio M40. It’s super-slim, great to hold and very simple to use. But good looks and a slender body are not enough. The M40’s optical performance means that while this camera isn&rsquo...

  • Solid metal body, Programmable shortcut button on the back
  • Poor image results with flash, A bit dated looking compared to others
  • Not the jazziest-looking compact camera, the M40 earned a chart spot with its sturdy body and low price.

  • Thin, lightweight, and portable design Effective flash over long distances Low noise levels through ISO 800 Good dynamic range at low ISO sensitivities Well organized, customizable photo software Affordable price
  • Loud zoom lens with barrel distortion and limited aperture No zoom in Movie mode No optical/mechanical image stabilization Lens blurs the edges and corners of the frame Overpowering flash at short distances Terrible noise and low dynamic range at ISO 1...

  • Abstract:  The Pentax Optio M40 comes with an affordable price of $380; it has little, though, to distinguish itself from other 3X-zoom, 8-megapixel point-and-shoot cameras (but perhaps we're getting a bit jaded). Its compact metal body feels solid and reliable. The...
