  • Excellent image quality with a good level of sharpness and detail overall, as well as excellent stereo sound quality when shooting Full HD movies. The array of exposure modes on offer is excellent, as is the focal length range offered by the 14x optical zoom lens
  • Battery life is pretty poor and the constant battle with the pop-up flash can get a little tiresome. Results from the GPS system are patchy, with the camera struggling to find a lock when not out in an open space

  • Long 14x optical zoom; very effective optical image stabiliser; good low-light performance; 1080p video; large 3-inch LCD screen
  • Poorly positioned pop-up flash; expensive; heavy; GPS feature drains battery quickly
  • The Canon PowerShot SX230 HS is an extremely versatile, capable and feature-packed compact superzoom. If you don't need the GPS feature, though, you'll be able to find a similar camera for less money....

  • Excellent overall image quality (sharpness, sensitivity), Sharp 1080p video with decent functions (zoom etc.), Audio quality (stereo effect in particular), Highend build and advanced settings (PSAM, manual focusing), Clear, simple interface in Auto modes
  • Could be more responsive, Poor battery life, Annoying popup flash
  • The Canon PowerShot SX230 HS is a very good camera indeed. It takes high-quality photos, films great video, and the interface and controls are nicely designed. It's just a shame about the battery life, which lasts well under 300 photos (even without th...

  • Wide-end of zoom 'only' delivers 28mm, Flash pops up unnecessarily, Poor battery life, Chromatic aberration (colour fringing).
  • Canon PowerShot SX230 HS verdict The Canon PowerShot SX230 HS is a 12.1 Megapixel pocket super-zoom with a 14x stabilised range and a 3in screen with a 16:9 aspect ratio. The HS suffix stands for High Sensitivity, providing enhanced low light perfor...
