The 7-inch before it
The 8.9 is one solid tablet. And goddamn is it light. Did we mention it's light. It's light

One of our main beefs with the 7-inch HDX (which still persists in the 8.9 version) is the lack of Google apps. Admittedly thATT#39

Abstract: The tablet market doesn't look very different than it did a year ago from the perspective of who's doing well and who's not. Perhaps the most exciting developments came towards the end of 2012 and beginning of 2013 from the usual big guys: Google released...

Abstract: Amazon's new Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 tablet may look the same on the outside as last year's model, but look under the hood and it's got a new engine, an overhauled Wi-Fi transmission system, some audio tweaks, and an updated operating system. That's right, the...
Extremely thin and light, Excellent display, Great battery life
No access to Google Play Store, Fire OS limited compared to Android, No expandable memory
Amazon's 8.9" Kindle Fire HDX boasts a stunningly thin and light design and has an excellent screen, but the lack of access to Google's Play Store means there's a heavy reliance on Amazon's limited apps...

Heavy on Amazon services, Lack of Android apps, Poor camera, Browser doesn't support Flash
If you want a solid and powerful multimedia tablet that is essentially a gateway to all things Amazon, this is your tablet. But if you're looking for something with more flexibility and better hardware, you're better off buying an iPad Air. The only thin...

The Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 may be an expensive tablet to use exclusively as an e-reader, but it may be appropriate for those looking to augment a high-percentage e-reading use case with the occasional email, browsing session or bout of Temple Run. It's clear that the Kindle Fire series has not yet been optimized for Canadian audiences — most of Amazon's best cloud features are unavailable outside of the US, and many popular Android apps and games are missing from the App Store — but its superlative hardware and excellent performance more than makes up for it....
Abstract: Lisa Gade reviews the Kindle Fire HDX 8.9. This is Amazon's new 8.9″ tablet for fall 2013. It weighs just 13.2 ounces and has one of the best tablet displays on the market with full sRGB color coverage, excellent contrast and resolution. The Fire HDX 8.9 ...

Light, Family-friendly, Easy access to media services
Not the best app store, Interface could be slicker, Can be beaten for value and quality
The HDX 8.9 is certainly a safe option. Bigger than an iPad Mini Retina, cheaper than an iPad Air or Galaxy Note 10.1, it's an outstanding middle-of-the-road option, and that's not as much of a contradiction as it would seem.Tidier and simpler than the re...
